Meet Dr Maahir Kariem

Dr Maahir Kariem’s diverse and significant experiences have established his robust foundation in medicine. He embarked on his medical journey with an internship from January 2012 to December 2014, beginning at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital and later moving to Tygerberg Hospital. Following his internship, Dr Kariem committed to community service for a year, working at Mowbray Maternity Hospital, Mitchells Plain District Hospital in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Dunoon Community Health Care Centre.

Furthering his commitment to healthcare, Dr Kariem served as a Medical Officer in various capacities from January 2015 to March 2019. His roles included positions in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Department of Surgery at Mitchells Plain Hospital and New Somerset Hospital. Each position enabled him to deepen his surgical expertise and patient care skills.

Dr Kariem’s profound commitment to surgery led him to a registrar role in the Department of General Surgery in April 2019. There, he successfully completed a rigorous four-year specialist training program. He has also served as a Surgical Consultant in the Department of Surgery at Mitchells Plain Hospital since April 2023.

Renowned for his leadership by example, Dr Kariem is motivated by the opportunity to alleviate suffering in times of need. He considers his ability to provide relief a privilege. Due to his similar upbringing, his deep connection to the patient community significantly enhances his relationships with them. This connection and calm bedside manner allow him to gain patients’ trust effectively.

Dr Kariem’s work ethic is distinguished by his philosophy of starting at the beginning and seeing tasks through to their completion, undeterred by the challenges that may come up in between. His commitment, enthusiasm, and compassion are unwavering, regardless of the situation at hand.
